A New Beginning

Michael A. MacDonaldI would first like to take this opportunity to thank Chris Ishkanian for his committed leadership and effective role as president for the past two-year term. I look forward to working with Chris in his role as past president and hope to be able to continue to keep up the standard of professionalism that Chris has shown us.

It is with great honor that I start my term as president, and I am sure that, along with new and experienced board of directors, we will continue to build on the success of TIAC.

I would also like to thank Tim and Joanne Grew for another very successful conference and a job well done in Newfoundland. I hope everyone had a wonderful time and that we will see everybody in Kelowna, BC next fall at TIAC’s 48th conference.

At this year’s conference we had the privilege of Ron King presenting to the membership about the benefits of mechanical insulation and how he and the National Insulation Association (NIA) are working diligently to promote and educate with the data collected and proof of how insulation can reduce greenhouse gas emissions with a quick payback.

Ron said, “an investment in mechanical insulation maintenance, if avoided or delayed, could cost much more than the initial investment. In many companies, mechanical insulation maintenance is viewed as a short-term expense versus an investment, even though the return is in many cases less than a year.

“Every day we hear about the energy efficiency and emissions reduction benefits of lighting, windows, envelope insulation, solar panels, wind turbines, etc. Those initiatives should be explored, but what about mechanical insulation? It has been around for centuries and is proven, ready now, and on a dollar-for-dollar basis a better value than many other initiatives that get all the press coverage and attention of federal, state, and local officials. The time is now to educate everyone about mechanical insulation, assess the opportunity, and allocate the resources to make it happen.”

TIAC will continue to work together with NIA to promote our industry, continuing to move forward to mutual gains.

I also had the opportunity in being a guest at the MIA / Local 95 Golf Tournament at the Klienburg Golf Club, north of Toronto to raise money for the Mesothelioma Research and Early Detection Programs. Thank you to the MIA board of directors, Scott Van Camp, Walter Keating, Jim Barnes, Richard Plue, and Tom Kirton Jr. for their nice hospitality.

Your board of directors is committed to working for the betterment of our industry and we welcome your input and your questions. We are available to discuss any issue relating to our industry and I encourage all members to consult with your board members at any time.
